November 7, 2013 | Ecumenical Institute News

On Thursday, November 8, Dr. Michael Gorman, Raymond E. Brown Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University, delivered a stimulating Dunning Lecture at St. Mary’s entitled “The Death of the Messiah: Theology, Spirituality, Politics”. St. Mary’s Dunning Lecture is an endowed public lectureship of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology designed to bring noteworthy and distinguished theologians and religious scholars to Roland Park and the Baltimore-area public. This was also as the inaugural lecture of the Raymond E. Brown Chair, established by the Unites States Province of the Society of St. Sulpice in honor of one of the foremost American Catholic Scripture scholars of the 20th Century, alumnus of St. Mary’s Seminary (1953) and faculty member (1959-71).

The lecture was preceded by a colloquium which brought together members of the faculties of both the School of Theology and the Ecumenical Institute of Theology. The following morning saw an open seminar entitled “A Morning with the Apostle Paul (and Friends)”, which featured interaction between and with a distinguished panel including Dr. Gorman; Rev. Dr. A. Katherine Grieb, Professor of New Testament at Virginia Theological Seminary; Rev. Dr. Richard B. Hays, Dean and George Washington Ivey Professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School; Rev. Dr. D. Brent Laytham, Dean of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology and Professor of Theology at St. Mary’s; and Rev. Dr. Thomas D. Stegman, S.J., Associate Professor of New Testament at Boston College.
